Overview

The Kigali Urban Fabric Initiative (UFI) is an informal settlement upgrading project with funding from AFD and the EU, and is being implemented in conjunction with the City of Kigali under the Kigali Informal Settlement Upgrading Project (KISUP).

The aim is to advance informal settlement upgrading in 3 Kigali communities by implementing small-scale social facilities and public spaces co-designed, co-constructed, and co-managed by residents and urban stakeholders, community representatives, and the City of Kigali.

The UFI Operator facilitating the project is a consortium led by Rwanda Women’s Network (RWN), working in collaboration with Bantu Studio (Bantu) and Espelia.

Community Engagement

The project uses deep engagement and participatory processes to select priority community facilities, co-design them, implement them through a co-construction process including employment and upskilling opportunities for local residents, and develop long-term co-management solutions.
