Informal Settlement Improvement
Three design studios of TDS-UDDI and CODI Baan Mankong which serve as case studies for teaching and learning about informal settlement improvement projects in Thailand.
Overview
The informal settlement improvement project of the Design Thinking Studio of the first year, Urban Design & Development International (UDDI) program, at Thammasat University, had both group and individual components, and based on a real life scenario in collaboration with the initiatives of the Community Organizations Development Institute (CODI) to upgrade informal settlements – the Baan Mankong (secure housing) program.
Students analyzed and proposed alternative spatial improvement solutions for an existing informal settlement, the Bang Si Muang community, with around 100 households on temple land in Nonthaburi province, Thailand. The key focus of this project was the street or courtyard as urban commons, a public space serving the residential neighborhood.
