Unhoused and Invisible: Research + Action
“Cartographies of an Invisible City” is a research project which provides the basis for a design studio in Rio de Janeiro. With a focus on unhoused people, this action-research initiative draws on select SDGs to achieve environmental, social and housing justice.
Overview
The research “Cartographies of an Invisible City” is the basis for the construction of an Advanced Design Studio, to be held between March and July 2026 at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at UFRJ. The Studio aims to expand the scope of methodologies for a sustainable approach to public spaces, focusing on unhoused people (UH). Through mapping the location of UH in Rio de Janeiro, the collected data will be used to foster interventions that could generate responses towards environmental and social justice. With the support of civil and governmental associations, this Studio will focus on developing permanent and temporary equipment for health and hygiene support, as well as ideas for social housing.
