The Yanjiang Rural Village School reimagines education in contemporary rural China as a model for rural revitalisation, addressing sustainability amid rapid urbanisation. The three-storey complex integrates with its natural context, serving five villages and 450 students. The vision is to transform perceptions of rural education through adaptable, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable architecture that sustains communities. Leveraging site constraints, the design creates user-centred spaces encouraging teacher–student interaction and adaptable public areas for future development. Incorporating passive environmental strategies and prioritising material quality, the school adopts a non-decorative, budget-conscious approach that is both sustainable and socially responsive, positioning rural education as vital to community resilience and long-term development.
