A PhD research project that investigated how diverse user needs and resident knowledge can inform the transformation of Denmark’s existing building stock to create socially inclusive and sustainable housing. The next phase of the work will focus on universal design and accessibility .

Overview

This PhD  project addressed the UN Sustainable Development Goals; Gender Equality, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Responsible Consumption and Production by examining how good design can respond to Denmark’s complex housing challenge that includes demographic growth in major cities, rural decline, and increasing social diversity and inequality. As new construction accounts for around 30% of national CO2 -emissions, the existing building stock represents a critical resource for sustainable transformation for low-cost social housing. The project investigates how housing can adapt to diverse user needs beyond the nuclear family model and explores strategies for socially and environmentally responsible reuse that strengthens inclusion, community resilience, cultural heritage and sustainable well-being. As the project goes forward, a key focus will be on new ways to achieve housing for universal access.
