An SEA course connected students with Natwar Parekh Compound residents to co-design climate-responsive interventions, integrating participatory research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and alignment with municipal systems to advance equitable, resilient, and community-driven urban development.

Overview

This course at the School of Environment & Architecture (SEA), developed in collaboration with Sandhya Naidu Janardhan and the Community Design Agency (CDA), connects design education with lived realities by engaging
students directly with communities. It positions architecture as a tool for equity, resilience, and inclusive urban development.

Structured around Building Change and Resilient Urban Futures, the course was situated in Natwar Parekh Compound (NPC), a large resettlement colony in Mumbai facing significant climate and infrastructure challenges. Through participatory research and co-design, students worked with residents to develop context-responsive interventions aligned with ongoing community efforts.

Community Engagement

The course emphasized community engagement through co-creation, with residents actively shaping outcomes. Students collaborated with interdisciplinary practitioners and engaged municipal stakeholders including MMRDA and BMC, ensuring proposals were grounded in local realities, aligned with systems, and responsive to community needs.

Partners

The course emphasized co-creation with residents, in partnership with the Obel Award Teaching Fellowship and SEA, engaging practitioners and MMRDA and BMC for grounded, actionable outcomes.

The video was developed by Group Chaturang  Samkit Racca, Kankana Choudhary, Aastha Deshpande, and Yash Bafna, students from the School of Environment and Architecture (SEA).
