Dar Al-Naseem Housing
Dar Al-Naseem is a climate-responsive, high-density housing project in Dongola, Sudan, inspired by Nubian architecture, integrating passive design, renewable energy, water efficiency, and walkable community to support dignity, privacy, and sustainable living.
Overview
Dar Al-Naseem Housing is a climate-responsive high-density housing community located in Dongola, Northern Sudan, a hot-arid city along the Nile where daily life centers on shaded courtyards. The project reinterprets Nubian courtyard housing principles into a contemporary community-based residential model adapted to extreme heat. Passive cooling strategies, pedestrian networks, rooftop solar energy, and greywater reuse reduce resource consumption and improve thermal comfort. The project targets middle-income Nubian families, responding to extended family living patterns through gender-based privacy zoning within units and open-to-sky courtyards that support private outdoor life, ventilation, and daylight. Dar Al-Naseem proposes an affordable, culturally rooted, and environmentally resilient housing community.

Community Engagement
The project is informed by Nubian housing traditions in Dongola, including courtyard living, shaded outdoor spaces, and privacy hierarchies for extended families. These practices were translated into a contemporary housing community that supports dignity, social interaction, and climate adaptation.
