Bayt al-Karāmah is a climate-responsive housing project in Sennar, Sudan, designed for families of fallen soldiers. It supports dignified living through culturally grounded spatial organization, passive strategies, and community-oriented planning.

Overview

Bayt Al-Karāmah is a climate-responsive housing project in Sennar, Sudan, developed for families of fallen soldiers, many of whom are now female-led households. The project challenges imported Eurocentric housing models by grounding density, spatial organization, and environmental strategies in local climate, culture, and everyday domestic life. It proposes dignified, affordable housing that supports privacy, safety, and economic resilience in a post-conflict context. Passive strategies such as cross-ventilation, shaded terraces, thermal mass, and inward-facing blocks reduce reliance on mechanical systems while supporting social life. The project demonstrates how culturally grounded design can create dignified, scalable housing in hot-climate contexts.
