The research uses participatory heritage education and community mapping for sustainable development, empowering communities in Magé, Brazil to manage cultural landscapes (SDGs 4, 11, 16).

Overview

This research explores participatory heritage education in Magé (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), addressing local conflicts, invisibility, and sustainable development through cultural and nature-based approaches. It combines community mapping, participatory inventories, and affective cartographies to foster democratic management of cultural landscapes. The project connects directly to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). What excites me most is how heritage education can reveal invisible landscapes and empower local communities to co-produce knowledge and stewardship practices. Community engagement was a central component through workshops with schools, youth, and residents of traditional and marginalized communities.
